A couple of years ago, I discovered Carrara Pastries in Moorpark, CA, and recently they have expanded. They have added a café in Agoura Hills, CA, and the Moorpark location has been remodeled to accommodate tables, a gelato bar, a coffee bar, and soon they will be granted their liquor license so that they can serve wine. They also serve sandwiches and salads now that are amazing! If you close your eyes while eating any of their savory dishes or while sipping on a cappuccino, it will feel like you have been transported to Italy.

The Tickle Tree Café is conveniently located off the 210 freeway. I have a dear friend who lives in South Pasadena, and I live out in Ventura County, so we are always looking for spots along the freeway where we can meet halfway between both our homes. This café is small, clean, and serves good food. The yelp reviews all raved about the tuna melt, so we HAD TO order one. Delicious! We also ordered the Orange French Toast and the Huevos Rancheros. The French Toast was very flavorful. It was a delightful lunch, and I would return to the Tickle Tree!
2853 Foothill Blvd, La Crescenta-Montrose, CA 91214 Brunch is very affordable here, $17.99 + tax & service (about $22 total) per adult, with endless mimosas, an efficiently run omelette bar, delicious desserts and waffles, and a nice selection of breakfast meats and potatoes. My one criticism is that they do not have many lunch-type items, but that is probably why the cost is lower. There is no prime rib or lunch meats. The grounds are beautiful though, and the service was attentive. I have also been there on a Saturday morning for breakfast. The plates are about $11 and the portions are generous.
http://www.pieology.com/ There are numerous locations for this stellar stop, and I have frequented the one on 593 N. Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks. It's a genius idea! A pizza bar, where you make customized, personal pizzas. They provide the dough and all the toppings, and you tell them what you want on your pizza--kind of like the Subway of pizzas. One attractive feature to this stop is that it's only $7.50 per pizza, and each pizza is quite large for one person! Delicious and affordable--two qualities that make Pieology a stellar stop! My son and I love to visit the restaurants featured on Guy Fieri's show called Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Usually the places are far away from our home, but I happen to find this gem in Santa Barbara, about an hour from my home. Besides the amazing fresh and delicious food, I was attracted to the story of the owners. The café features a special dish that allows you to taste a little bit of everything that was featured on the show--it is called the Guy Fieri plate and includes the turkey fritter, pesto green beans, quinoa mango salad, and a piece of carrot cake. It's amazing! There are a ton of gluten free options in the bakery and on the menu as well. I only wish the café was even closer to my home. I am really happy that things are going well for this family, and hope that more people stop to visit the Savoy Café and Deli. Tip: Use their call-ahead service and put your name in 30 minutes before you arrive so that your table is ready when you get there! (805) 494-2530 Address: 446 W Hillcrest Dr, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 http://www.mamadsnewport.com/ This is what I have dreamed of for a restaurant. Attention to detail, detail, detail!!! From the moment I arrived, I could tell that Mama D's employees had been trained well. If guests were asked to wait, the hosts all thanked them profusely for waiting. Lemonade, cold water, and fresh bread were all offered to guests as they awaited their table. The wait staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The meal was OUTSTANDING. The pink sauce for my pasta was amazing, the specials were tasty, and the portions were generous. Complimentary chocolate chip cookies were even given at the end of the meal. The whole experience was stellar! I HAD TO find the manager before we left to let him know that I would be bragging about his restaurant, that I noticed all the details, and that I appreciated the effort he put in to creating this unforgettable dining experience for us. He thanked me and then asked me to wait so that he could run to the back to get a business card for me to treat me to a complimentary appetizer during my next visit. All I have to say, is that I'll see you soon, Mama D's! http://www.tikkagrill.com/Home.html 5790 Lindero Canyon Road. Westlake Vaillage, CA Tikka Grill serves fresh food that is always consistenly delicious. My favorite dish there is the Fajita Pita Combo Plate. The fajita pita alone is filling and only costs $5.99. You can add two sides to make it a combo plate for just a few extra dollars. The portions are generous, and you will always leave satisfied with your meal. You can also have them cater your party! Their Chinese Chicken Salad is wonderful, and they have many vegetarian options as well. One of the purposes of this website is to share hidden gems like Tikka Grill, which you may not know about...but now you do, so you really have no excuse not to stop to eat there! So...I know that I have blogged about Maggiano's before but I must underscore my suggestion to dine here after some recent experiences. We celebrated a few birthdays here recently, and the service and pricetag for the amazing meal never cease to amaze me. Ordering "family style" is the only way that I know to do it here. Family Style Menu: http://tinyurl.com/4akrblv There is enough variety to please everyone, and you can even PRE-ORDER it all so that the food just keeps coming out after you sit down. The other piece that I cannot rave enough about is the fact that they clear your plates from the table, and keep the table well tended to throughout your dining experience. This is why we pay for service, people! Finally a restaurant who has got it right. For the amount of money you are spending, the amount of food you are getting, and the amount of attention you are paid, Maggiano's is a STELLAR STOP.
Our favorites: Bruschetta (so fresh!), Calamari (melts in your mouth), Rigatoni "D" (no brainer), Chopped Salad (much better than the boring Caesar), Cheesecake and Chocolate Zuccotto. Now GO...RUN THERE if you have not done so already!!! |
